If you get frequent headaches and nothing seems to fully explain them, here's a possibility worth considering: the problem might not be in your head at all. It might be in your neck.
These are called cervicogenic headaches — headaches that originate from the joints, muscles, and nerves of the neck — and they're far more common than most people realize.
The tell-tale signs
Neck-driven headaches often share a pattern:
- Pain that starts at the base of the skull and wraps forward.
- A headache that's usually one-sided and steady, rather than throbbing.
- Symptoms that flare with certain neck positions or after long hours at a screen.
- Tightness or tenderness in the neck and upper shoulders that seems connected.
If that sounds familiar — especially the "starts at the base of the skull" part — your neck is worth a closer look.
Why this distinction matters
Treating a neck-driven headache like a typical tension headache (more pain relievers, ride it out) tends to fail, because it never addresses the source. When the driver is genuinely in the neck, the fix lives there too:
- Restore movement in the stiff, irritated neck joints.
- Release the muscles — especially the deep ones at the base of the skull — that refer pain upward.
- Rebuild support so your neck isn't constantly overworking against a forward-head, screen-bound posture.
That combination — hands-on care plus targeted rehab — is what tends to break the cycle for good.
A quick reality check
Not every headache comes from the neck. Migraines, dehydration, vision issues, and other causes are real and matter. The point isn't to self-diagnose — it's to know that if your headaches travel with neck tension and start low at the skull, there's a treatable mechanical cause worth assessing.
If headaches have been part of your week for too long, book a visit and we'll figure out where they're really coming from.
